After some delays to ensure a stable experience, Fedora 45 has landed! And with it, a more advanced Linux desktop experience is here. Great for work, gaming and whatever else you need your computer for.
Some of the highlights across each edition are below.
Fedora Workstation 45- GNOME 51, featuring reworked frame scheduling for smoother desktop animations when the system is under load, plus more efficient screen recording.
- Monitor brightness is remembered across reboots and HDR changes, while scalable SVG cursors remain sharp at different display scales.
- Files gains better responsiveness when working with large or slow folders, a counter when dragging multiple files, and grouped notifications.
- Calendar receives performance improvements, while the file previewer gets a redesigned interface using GTK 4 and libadwaita.
- Accessibility improvements include keyboard controls for screenshot selections and wider support for the Reduced Motion setting.
- The new oo7 component handles password and key storage.
- KDE Plasma 6.8, with per-screen virtual desktops and improvements carried over from Plasma 6.7.
- Improved remote desktop performance and image quality, two-way clipboard synchronisation, and an exclusive mode. These features require a compatible remote desktop client.
- A built-in microphone test, a quick light/dark theme toggle, and a system tray indicator for background applications.
- A new accessibility feature that can automatically click when the mouse pointer stops moving.
- Refreshed Oxygen and Breeze themes, alongside a beta version of the optional Union theming system.
- Graphics improvements include triple buffering by default on NVIDIA GPUs and improved HDR rendering when using ICC colour profiles.
- Spectacle screen recordings can include both system audio and microphone input.
I've been running Fedora 45 Beta on my new PC for about a month now, and it has been a very stable experience. I continue to be really impressed with Fedora overall and it really does continue to be my distro of choice (especially with KDE Plasma).
Fedora Asahi Remix 45 is also exciting for those with Apple devices as it brings out of the box initial support for Apple M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max.
