Final Fantasy Resonance has seemingly gone down really, really well with fans of the franchise — and so it's surprising to hear that Square Enix's leadership were apparently against the idea of the game.
Resonance is very much a callback to classic Final Fantasy in terms of gameplay and structure; some would go as far to argue that it's just what the property needs at this point.
The recently released and highly rated RPG is built on the bones of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius — the mobile gacha game that was shut down back in 2024.
However, Resonance reworks entire systems to ensure that everything functions as you'd expect of a traditional Final Fantasy adventure. After playing it myself for review, it's clear that the development team put a lot of effort into essentially remaking Exvius.
But according to project producer Keisuke Nakashima, his higher-ups wanted a simple port of Exvius rather than the extensive adaptation that we ended up with.
