Jujutsu Kaisen Creator Gege Officially Replaces Gojo Satoru

Gege Akutami's Jujutsu Kaisen began its run in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump on March 4, 2018, in the 14th issue of the magazine that year. Since then, Gojo Satoru has been established as the face of the entire franchise. Even though Gojo was never the main character of the series, his popularity was incredible and saw him become a global icon.

However, eventually, Gojo Satoru's era had to end, and that officially came to be in the Shinjuku Showdown arc. Decades have passed since then, and finally, Gege Akutami has established his permanent replacement for Gojo Satoru in Japan, and it is none other than his own student, Yuji Itadori. Gege's latest release of Jujutsu Kaisen confirms that Yuji Itadori is carrying out the same job as Gojo Satoru and has inherited all his dreams, which he will see fulfilled until he eventually dies 300 years later.

Jujutsu Kaisen Has Officially Replaced Gojo Satoru With Yuji Itadori

Gojo Satoru ended up becoming the face of Jujutsu Kaisen immediately after the beginning of the manga due to his wild popularity. Eventually, his era came to an end with the release of Chapter 236 on September 24, 2023, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 43. In this chapter, Gojo Satoru's battle against Ryomen Sukuna finally ended, and he ended up dying in the process. Gojo's death came as a shock to the vast majority of the fans of the series, but it is one that cemented his legacy even further. Gojo's character continued to be brought up in the manga in the subsequent chapters through a multitude of flashbacks, which went to show his incredible importance to the series.

In the final chapter of the series, that is, JJK Chapter 271, released officially on September 30, 2024, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 44, Gojo Satoru finally passed on his dream to Yuji Itadori. He asked him to create a brand new future by seeking a different kind of strength than his own. Years later, this has officially come true in the Modulo era, and now Yuji Itadori has permanently replaced Gojo as the leader of the next generation and the one who nurtures students just as Gojo once did.

"Haven't we had enough of Gojo Satoru already? Seek out a different kind of strength than mine. I expect great things from you, Yuji!" — Gojo Satoru entrusts the future to Yuji Itadori, Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter #271

Initially, Yuji Itadori was nowhere to be seen in the Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo series. However, he eventually went on to return with the release of Chapter 19, which was on January 26, 2026, and from there onwards, his role became even more prominent. By the end of Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo, Yuji Itadori has changed the sorcery world forever, and any new development from here onwards will be built upon the foundation that he has laid down already.

"I was scared. I believed I shouldn't have interfered with the current generation. should've gotten all shriveled up and kicked the bucket by now. But when you stop looking at today, looking at the past or the future becomes impossible. I should've done this with my own power. But I won't disregard my purpose any longer. How Gojo Passed On The Torch To Yuji

In JJK Chapter 271, Gojo Satoru asked Yuji to carry the torch after him. Gojo's dream was to break the corrupt order of the Jujutsu world. That dream was brought to fruition by the end of the original story, but this dream had to be continued. That is precisely what happened through Yuji Itadori in JJK Modulo Chapter 22. Yuji not only defended the next-gen sorcerers of Japan but fulfilled one of the long-lasting dreams of Gojo and many of his friends: the complete erasure of Cursed Energy and the death of the vast majority of the cursed spirits in Japan.

"I'm going to live for another 300 or so years. I will handle whatever follows. And if necessary, I'll bear the consequences of this great sin." — Yuji reveals his lifespan, Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo Chapter #22

What's more, Yuji Itadori finally started to understand what Gojo asked of him in their last meeting together. He finally decided to lead the next generation by example and step into the footsteps of his original mentor for the very first time, which was a beautiful touch by the author. To make the comparisons between the two even clearer, Gege Akutami also confirmed in the release of the third volume of Modulo that Yuji Itadori had become a Special Grade Sorcerer, just like Gojo, and was recognized globally as the Strongest, which once again makes him similar to his mentor. All things considered, Gojo Satoru passed on all his hopes, dreams, and even his status to Yuji Itadori, which meant that the young protagonist stands as Gojo's perfect replacement in the new era.

Gojo's Impact On The Jujutsu Kaisen World Is Immense

Gojo Satoru's impact on the world of Jujutsu Kaisen is absolutely immense. Even years after his death, Gojo Satoru continues to be important because it is he who set the basis for everything that has been achieved in the sorcery world right now. By raising the next generation who would challenge and break the status quo, Gojo Satoru played an extremely important role in the story. By raising Yuji Itadori and instilling in him the right values, Gojo paved the way for the Jujutsu world to be changed forever. It is his values that have eventually led to the removal of Cursed Spirits from Japanese society for the most part.

Gojo's upbringing of Yuji Itadori has also led to him raising the next generation and replicating what Gojo did with him. This once again goes to show how important his legacy is and why he is still one of the most important characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise established by Gege Akutami. More than that, Gojo's importance continues to shine through even in the Modulo era. At various points in the story, Gojo Satoru was referenced, and that goes to show that his mark on this incredible story will never truly be forgotten.

Sadly, Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo has now concluded, but Gege Akutami has teased a return to writing manga, with more developments potentially being announced at Jump Festa 2027. Whether this return will be with Jujutsu Kaisen or not remains to be seen. If it is, then fans can once again expect more content about Gojo Satoru and his legacy being carried on even further from here onwards. We absolutely cannot wait to see what Gege has in store for us and whether Gojo's legacy will be further enriched moving forward or not.
