New Job Listing Signals Bigger Plans For Sony’s “Intelligent Pricing” Initiative

You may remember back in March, it was revealed Sony was dabbling in dynamic pricing, meaning games could end up cheaper — or in some instances, more expensive — for some users based on purchasing habits. A new job listing has raised concerns over the tactic once more as Sony is seeking a Senior Director of Digital Games Monetization.
As uncovered by TheGamePost, the listing directly points to “Intelligent Pricing” as well as “Targeted Offers.” Part of their job will be “driving the adoption and evolution” of the initiative. Said role will use data and automation to “improve publisher outcomes” and its commercial advantage.
“A key accountability will be driving the adoption and evolution of Intelligent Pricing, expanding the impact of the Targeted Offers program and accelerating the development of future monetization capabilities across the Store.
The Senior Director will champion innovative approaches to pricing, promotions, experimentation and commercial optimization. They will also help shape future capabilities that leverage data, automation and AI to improve publisher outcomes and strengthen PlayStation’s commercial advantage.”
If Sony is seeking someone to really lead this project, it seems likely that dynamic pricing/Intelligent Pricing is here to stay regardless of the red flags some have pointed, specifically that some users could end up seeing a deal while not logged in, only to face a higher price after logging into their account just because they’re more likely to buy games at full price.
To be clear, Intelligent Pricing could be a different thing than its dynamic pricing system, as Sony hasn’t outright confirmed them to be the same, but my hunch is Sony didn’t want to use the term dynamic pricing as it’s often left a sour taste in the mouths of consumers back when Wendy’s — never thought I’d bring up a restaurant on this site — kicked around the idea of adding it to the burger chain back in 2024.
The same issues surfaced in a similar way — prices surged at peak times while production costs aren’t increasing by the minute, leaving many feeling like they’d be price gouged. It’s the exact problem people feel about PlayStation implementing it and I can certainly understand the concerns users have, especially if non-logged-in users are seeing deals that logged-in users are exempt from.
