New Reality Break Debut Video for Magic: The Gathering Ushers In Jace's Villain

Wizards of the Coast has released a debut video for its newest Magic: The Gathering set. This sixteen-minute video spotlights the upcoming Reality Fracture set and its unique selling point of clashing realities orchestrated by the planeswalker Jace Beleren.

The Reality Fracture Debut Video

The big hook of the Reality Fracture set is that Jace Beleren, after spending countless years defending and protecting the multiverse from calamity, has decided to recreate the multiverse, one free of pain or suffering. To this end, he has created the Echoverse, a version of the Magic setting with wildly different histories, locations, and alternate versions of iconic planeswalkers. This creation has further splintered Jace's mind, leaving only one known as The Theorist.

That is the meta story of the set. Classic Magic characters and locations battle their Echoverse counterparts, all while figuring out how to stop The Theorist. Reflecting this in gameplay are echoed pairs, a set of two cards featuring a character facing off against their echo counterpart, featuring not just alternate looks, but alternate color identity. Each Play Booster in the set is guaranteed to contain one echoed pair.

For longtime Magic fans, seeing familiar characters in a new light is especially appealing. Echoverse Lilliana The Faultless using white mana instead of black. Karn reinterpreted as a five-colored peaceful protector of Mirrodin, a land that never fell to Phyrexian invasion. Strixhaven, the magic school showcased in two sets and a Dungeons & Dragons setting, is now twisted in Hexhaven Academy by The Theorist.

But the biggest head-turning mechanic in Reality Fracture is called Empowering Jace. Reflecting Jace's newfound omniscience, this new mechanic will let you create a Jace planeswalker token, complete with its own loyalty counters. If you have multiple Empowering Jace effects, that will add more loyalty counters to the token, providing more effects.

Lastly, Reality Fracture will feature many alternate art and borderless art cards in keeping with its world-changing gimmick. Sculptor's Stronghold is an alternate border set for Hexhaven, showcasing The Theorist's unconventional taste in architecture. The Braintwister series are borderless art cards featuring strange optical illusions or surreal imagery. Certain cards will also receive a Shattered Mirror and Facet Foil Shattered Mirror treatment with fractured pieces of glass.

The prerelease of Reality Fracture begins on September 25. The set will then debut on Magic: The Gathering Arena on September 29. The set's full release is on October 2nd.
