The dream of cheap single-board computers seems a little far from reality nowadays, with the Raspberry Pi announcing another price increase. A lot of this continues to be thanks to AI data centres, buying up all the available RAM and other parts they need.

In the announcement they said:

From today, we are raising the price of the 16GB variant of Raspberry Pi 5 by $80, to $385. The 16GB Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 variants are increasing in price by $40, and updated prices for these can be found in the product brief on the Compute Module 5 product page. As with previous price rises, we have avoided making blanket increases across the entire product line, and we are holding the price of Raspberry Pi 500+, our premium all-in-one desktop computer built into a mechanical keyboard, which also features 16GB of RAM.

That's a pretty steep rise for the 16GB Raspberry Pi 5. That's on top of some previous increases earlier in October, and even more back in April.

We can expect this to continue for years, unless some big bubble bursts. I couldn't imagine buying a Raspberry Pi at the current prices, you might as well get a full mini-PC. Although it depends what you need the hardware for though. Either way, the hardware market as it is right now is terrible for pretty much all consumer devices. We're just not important when various hardware makers can sell for much higher prices to data centres that aren't even built yet.
